We couldn't have done it without you!

November 02, 2020

To our Plastic Ocean Project Family,

To simply say thank you would be an understatement of our appreciation for your generosity. Over the course of October 2020, you have helped us raise a total of $1,705 to sponsor undergraduate research through our organization’s Tealstarter campaign. The ongoing challenges of navigating a global pandemic have made the last few months challenging for all. We couldn’t be more grateful for the support, dedication and passion you have provided to our student organization. It is uplifting and invigorating to receive such support during these uncertain times. As undergraduate students, we thank you for investing in robust and impactful student research.

Each donation was essential for us to make a difference in our laboratory, our fieldwork and in the lives of our students. Your gift will help take our students into local waterways to collect samples, into the laboratory to analyze and study plastic pollution and into the next stages of their lives as researchers, visionaries and problem-solvers for our planet. Every donation will help change the life of a student and contribute to the addition of quality work in the field of science. It is our goal to conduct research studies with applications that reach far beyond our lab, UNCW and the NC Coast.

While we can’t fully express how much we value your support for our mission and organization, we want to thank you for your contribution to the fight to save our seas and heal our planet. People like you keep the world going and keep us going. You give us hope, energy and motivation to move forward. With that, we couldn’t be more thankful for your support.

An ocean of gratitude,

Sam Shores, President, UNCW Plastic Ocean Project

Avery Owen, Vice President, UNCW Plastic Ocean Project

Choose a giving level

Level Phytoplankton

Your donation will go to providing necessary laboratory supplies such as nitrile gloves to protect students from harmful chemicals and ethanol and wash acetone to keep our lab space clean!

Level Pufferfish

Your donation will contribute to necessary laboratory chemicals to help students study and analyze samples ranging from fish, coastal survey samples, and water samples here from the Cape Fear River and our coastline!

Level Grouper

Your donation will provide equipment for our microscopic Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, which will allow students to identify the type of plastics found in their samples to better understand how different plastics impact the environment.

Level Tuna

Your donation will provide students with spectrogram software to analyze marine acoustics, or listen to the natural sounds captured of the marine environment to understand how human impact changes the sounds of our seascapes

Level Tiger Shark

Your contribution will help provide a hydrophone system for student research in marine acoustics and capturing sound in our coastal ecosystems. This sound system will help us better understand how human impact changes sound in the ocean and studies how animals may vocalized in the marine environment!

Level Blue Whale

This will directly fund ship time necessary to survey offshore locations for visual and audio data. Ship time and marine acoustics are the most expensive portions of our work, but are just as critical as any to give students hands on experience in research in the field!
