Thank you for visiting the Flicker Film Society Tealstarter!
Who Are We?
Flicker Film Society is a UNC-Wilmington society that provides film students with the education, equipment, and experience needed to succeed in the competitive industry. Our goal is to go beyond what students learn in the classroom, giving students opportunities to build their resumes, speak with industry professionals, learn industry tips and techniques, and work on several productions. Our society exists so that students feel prepared to work in the film industry after graduation and succeed in their field of interest. In order to accomplish this, we are asking for donations to buy equipment, bring in guest speakers, fund student films, and support our film festival.
What Do We Do, and What is Our Budget Plan?
Split into three divisions, Flicker covers every element of the industry so that students can explore all of their interests and discover new career paths.
Flicker Meetings (the first division) occur weekly and focus on hands-on instructional seminars. Each meeting focuses on a different element of film production where our members learn about one aspect of the industry before participating in an exercise to practice with equipment, gain team and leadership skills, and test their creativity. We've done everything from resume workshops to creative lighting seminars to making an entire short film in one hour. We emphasize teamwork and innovation, so this division also allows members to check out any of our film equipment to make their own productions. We are asking for $1000 out of our $2000 goal to pay for new equipment so that we can have several student productions filming at once, giving members more opportunities to build their resumes. We hope to give our students equipment as similar to industry standards as possible to help close the learning gap between student films and work after graduation.
The second division, Flicker Production Meetings, focuses on making one short film (10-15 minutes) per semester. The meetings are structured for beginner filmmakers so that they get on-set experience with full support while they explore leadership roles, such as directing, producing, production design, and other department head positions. We are asking for $500 out of our $2000 budget to fund the short film. Specifically, covering the costs for permits, art department, food for the crew, and to pay actors.
The last division is the Reel Teal Film Festival. The festival, entering its 14th year, receives over 4,000 international and local submissions each year. These submissions are all judged by Flicker members and the entire event is scheduled, planned, and hosted by our students. A fantastic resume booster, Reel Teal gives students the ability to work in the festival circuit, understand the business side of the film industry, and work together as event planners and marketers. Open to the public, the festival also includes a reception where filmmakers can discuss their shorts and mingle with film students. For this division, we are asking for the last $500 of our $2000 goal to pay for food for the reception as well as awards for winning films.
